Are you getting fewer blog comments?

Wondering why you are getting fewer comments on your blog?

If you upgraded your Blogger profile to Google+, readers can now only comment on your blog if they have a Google+ page or profile.

Millions don't!

  1. Some blogs I like to read have upgraded to Google+, so now I can't leave comments. That's why I won't change my blog profile; I want all my (non-spam) readers to reach me.

    1. My sentiments exactly, Yvonne. I'm sure many people didn't read the fine print before they 'upgraded' to Google+. (I have nothing against G+ as a separate entity, though I can't use it with a slow Internet connection.)

  2. Judy, good point. While I do have a Google Plus account, I wasn't pleased when I tried to update to obtain Google "authorship." I discovered my Google+ profile (more factual and businesslike) superseded the more artsy "About" I had included on my blogspot blog. Oh well. I decided to keep the two separate to maintain direct control over what I said about myself in both places. Your post here provides extra confirmation that I made the right choice. I don't like it when companies ram "choices" down people's throats, no matter how handy--not to mention, free--they may be.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Jacqi. It's reassuring to know that others share my sentiments.

  3. Thanks, I didn't know that. Can I reverse it?!

    1. I'm not sure (because it does not concern me personally). I think I read somewhere that it can only be reversed within a certain time. You will need to look for an answer to that question via the Google Support link I included, or by asking the question in social media, genealogy groups etc. Good luck!

    2. Joan - I think the reversal was within 60 days, so you might just make it. (I am leaving this comment on 14th Nov)

  4. Thanks for this posting Judy. I've chosen to not go down the Google road and as they're increasing their control over the internet I now find it difficult to follow blogs which retain the "Feedburner" email signup which is now owned by Google. I also can't unsubscribe from those I'm following unless I interact with Google.
I've been wondering why I'm no longer able to comment on some people's blogs and now it's become clear... It's all such a shame but I will not be manipulated, by a big corporation, into using their product which I consider inferior. Guess I was always a "little rebel"... :-) Thanks again, Catherine

    1. Hi Catherine. Like you, I chose not to link my Blogger profile to Google Plus - but unlike you, I am NOT having any difficulty following, subscribing to or unsubscribing from Blogger blogs (which use Feedburner). In fact, I find that blogs on Blogger are easier to interact with than those on WordPress. I'm afraid I can't offer any technical advice about unsubscribing, except that the link near the bottom of emails has always worked for me. I daresay there is more information in Blogger's help pages, forums etc. Good luck!

  5. I pondered for ages debating whether or not to merge the two. In the end I did and as far as I know people are still leaving comments - no one has emailed to say then can not! I do offer multiple way to follow -via email and FB page - Twitter and G+. For me the positives of Google outweighed the negatives. I have not though merged my blog responses with G+ responses. To see what I mean look at Thomas at Geneabloggers and you will see the difference!

I took sometime to understand Google+ - rather than interacting with people which is more traditional, G+ allows interaction but the emphasis is on the subject matter rather than on the person. Therefore it is about meeting new people and maintaining interactions with previously known.

It took a while for me to get it, but now I do it seems obvious! -

    1. Since I wrote the above Judy has tried to leave comment on the Anglers Rest blog and was unable. I have there at the moment enabled anon posts (much to my horror) and moderated so I can see what posts are left. It is not perfect and I suspect that I will fiddle with Anglers Rest a bit more and write a blog post, which will appear in due course.

    2. Julie, I will look forward to reading your blog post. I can't use Google+ at all when my Internet connection is slow, so I am not a fan. And if I do NOT link my blogs to my G+ profile, people who use Gmail or Blogger can easily comment even if they don't use G+. As for blogs... all comments are emailed to me for approval, but I enable and disable 'anonymous' commenting depending on how busy I am. If a specific post is getting spam and nothing else, I disable comments for that one post (but I select 'keep existing comments'). I tinker with my blog settings from time to time, trying to work out what is best for everyone!

    3. Judy,

I have whipped up a quick blog post, which can be found at http://anglersrest.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/should-be-tuesdays-tip-google-plus-and.html
